If you’re hoping to get the old Sonos app back, it’s not happening. Sonos CEO Spence expressed optimism about the return of the old Sonos app in a Reddit AMA on Tuesday. Although there were discussions about bringing it back, tests showed that doing so would likely cause more problems, according to Spence.
After the new app was made available on May 7th, Spence apologized and declared in August that the firm would delay the launch of two products “until our app experience reaches the caliber that we, our customers, and our partners anticipate from Sonos.”
Here’s Spence’s explanation as to why it can’t bring back the old app:
The secret, of course, is that Sonos is more than simply a smartphone app—it’s also software that operates on your speakers and in the cloud. We have been making updates to the software that powers our speakers and the cloud in the months following the release of the new mobile app, which has made S2 less dependable and stable than it was a few months ago. We regretfully have to say that further testing has led us to believe that re-releasing S2 will exacerbate the issues. This is undoubtedly disappointing. To be honest, I found it unsatisfactory.
Additionally, Spence discussed two-factor authentication (“a possibility”) in the AMA. Although Spence states that the app “remains my #1 priority,” he commits to returning to Reddit on occasion to “engage on the most upvoted questions.”
